a racing series

With most short tracks suffering from low car counts maybe it's time to change things up a little, see what happens. Think this over for a minute. Just might work. This comes from thinking about the post that Future Race Driver wrote in, and Tom (the wrecker driver) responded to.
Back home, in the early 70's, there were three tracks (pavement) that ran the same classes but a few different rules for each division. Late Models, Modifieds, Chargers (street stocks), and Mini Stocks.
They were fairly close to each other, geographically....Maybe like Benton, Malden and St. Gen.
It was difficult to take your car and do the work every weekend to be legal at separate tracks so you could race more than one night. The owners finally got together and decided to make things easier on the competitors and came up with a rules package that was basically the same at each track. Just a little tweaking on the chassis was needed to be competitive at each track. Engine, drive train and tire rules were all the same.
They came up with a points system that combined points received at each track, a series points system.
They each kept their own points and had their individual track champions AND a Series Champion also. Not only did each division draw more cars on any given night, the tracks benefited also, more fans in the stands!
It was great racing for all involved!! The tracks, drivers and fans! Nothing like rooting for the driver from your 'home track' while hoping they'd beat the 'invaders' from the other tracks! Keeping track of the individual track points and the series points. You know you wanted your 'home driver' to be leading the series points.....gives ya a little bragging rights!! lol It leads to some pretty intense competition.
The fans are happy, more cars! The drivers are happy, they get to race 3 times every week-end, and the tracks are happy, car count is up, fans in the stands, money in their pockets!!
It was kind of interesting, at first, you'd go to your home track on a Friday night, then go to the other series track on Sat. night, then to the third on Sunday afternoon. And you'd ALWAYS wear your home track shirt to the other places. At first, you could look into the stands and see the groups huddled together from the other places...The 'opposing fans'!! lol Eventually, as the year went on, you'd see them mingled together....harassing each other in a friendly, competitive manner. Didn't hurt beer sales either....LOL You'd bet someone from one of the other tracks.....Betcha a beer my man will beat yours!! Everyone had a great time!
If someone was unfortunate and had a wreck, you'd see people from other teams/tracks helping to get ya fixed so they could race (and hopefully beat ya) the next night.....:)
What's the worse thing that could happen? Benton would benefit, Malden would, and it would be a chance to get Poplar Bluff opened back up.
We're lucky, Benton opened back up after closing, that doesn't usually happen, usually once their closed, their closed for good. :(
We've lost enough short tracks!! Time to roll with the times, keep these places open!!!
Just a thought, whatcha all think????

Re: a racing series

Malden, Benton and Poplar Bluff would be a great three-track circuit, but you'd have a hard time convincing any of them to run on a Sunday.

You'd also have to convince Benton to drop sprints and pick up crate late models. It's hard to say how that decision would impact their grandstand crowds.

The upside is that having three local tracks running the same classes with the same rules would almost certainly boost car counts in every class. And it would open the possibly of all three tracks teaming up for big-money specials and point funds.

Re: a racing series

Good idea, it would open other possibilities as far as bringing in some touring divisions. Or bring in some Cup drivers for a special show....that'd pack any track.
They had NASCAR NITE at Pevely last night, I haven't heard any results yet, but I know they had alot of Cup drivers there, think they were running modifieds, not sure though. I'm sure the place was packed!!!

If you notice, there are more fans that attend a crate late model show at Benton than when the Sprints run.
IMO, give me a good late model show anytime. I like the sprints, but I'm more of a late model fan.
