Message:   Red Arrows Have Local Air Cadets in Tow For Charity

Thirty Spalding air cadets are set to take part in a very unusual fundraising event in February thanks to the generosity of the RAF’s Red Arrows. The young cadets from 1406 (Spalding) Squadron Air Training Corps hope to raise money for several Lincolnshire charities by undertaking a sponsored tow of a Red Arrows Hawk aircraft. The fundraising effort will take place on the 26th February 2003 at RAF Scampton near Lincoln. The Red Arrows have set the air cadets the challenge of pulling the 5-tonne aircraft for ** metres along a taxiway at RAF Scampton.

Operation Tow-A-Hawk was the brainchild of 18 year old Cadet Sergeant Tom England. He wrote to the Red Arrows asking if the famous aerobatic team would help the air cadets with their fundraising efforts. The Red Arrows immediately said yes and Tom will be part of the team of cadets going to RAF Scampton to tow the Hawk. Red 1, Squadron Leader Spike Jepson, said “The Red Arrows are delighted to help out with this very worthy project. I am impressed that the idea came from the cadets themselves, and I look forward to seeing if they manage the challenge we have set them!”

The new Squadron Commander of 1406, Flight Lieutenant Keith Bate said, “We are really pleased that Tom England asked the Red Arrows to do this for us, we had been looking for a project to start us off on our new community service schemes and this fits the bill perfectly. By towing a Hawk jet and visiting the Reds our cadets can raise money, have some fun and learn about the work of one of the RAF’s most famous squadrons”.

The Newark Air Museum is one of three charities that will benefit from Operation Tow-A-Hawk; the other charities to benefit from the sponsored event are the Nottinghamshire & Lincolnshire Air Ambulance and RAFA (Royal Air Force Association). RAFA cares for former RAF personnel who are in need. The Newark Air Museum will utilise its portion of the money raised from the operation as a part of the Partnership Funding it is raising for its Lottery Fund Bid. The museum hopes to know the outcome of its Bid in early 2003, around the time when it will be celebrating thirty years of being officially open to the general public
