Greg Dirasian will be participating in the upcoming Libertarian Party National Convention as a member of both the New York and Michigan delegations.

Greg has told me that, time and circumstance permitting, he intends to offer a motion for repudiating the document titled ‘Iraq Exit Strategy’.

I want to get some buzz going on this, since people can’t be expected to vote for something that has just been sprung on them. I would like to see some alternate drafts and discussions of their relative merits. My own proposal follows:

In June of 2005, a document was published on the website of the National Libertarian Party, under the title “Iraq Exit Strategy”. The document was attributed to the Libertarian National Committee. The attribution was false. The Committee had not approved the document at that time.

The title of the document is also deceptive.

The so-called “exit strategy” declares that the United States is, quote, “obligated to make sure Iraq becomes a stable, independent, and functional country”, end quote. It implies that American military forces must remain in Iraq, and American taxpayers must provide foreign aid to the government of Iraq, at least until this putative obligation is fulfilled. It provides that, in any case, some American military forces must remain in Iraq for at least one year after the plan begins to be implemented.

These and other policy recommendations in the document titled “Iraq Exit Strategy” are in conflict, in letter and in spirit, with the National Platform of the Libertarian Party, which calls for non-intervention in the affairs of other nations, a military policy focused on protecting the people of the United States, and an end to foreign aid.

Accordingly, this convention declares that the document titled “Iraq Exit Strategy” in no way represents the views and principles of the membership of the Libertarian Party.
