Message:   Unknown to Alex and Lisa, Helen sat, legs crossed, atop the table in the darkened dining room. With her head lowered and eyes closed, tears streamed down her face. When she'd heard enough, she spoke.

"How touching," her voice a raspy whisper, "my brother and his wh*re."

It made them stop in mid-sentence.

"D*mn you, Helen!"

"No, brother." She looked up. "D*mn you. You plot and scheme against me and the ones I love. D*mn you."

She uncrossed her legs and let them dangle over the side of the table.

"Let me show you what it's like to watch someone you care for suffer."

Thrusting her arm forward, something leapt from her outstretched fingers. It hurtled across the room, struck Lisa in the chest and hurled her backward where she slammed into the wall.

Her mouth opened but before she could utter even a startled cry, Helen gestured again and Lisa's lips slammed shut.

"No, little worm, you don't get to scream, you don't get to whimper, you don't even get to moan in agony until I say you can."

Alex took a step forward, intending to intervene. In response, Helen flicked her wrist then made a fist. Alex screamed and doubled over in pain. Helen tightened the fist and he fell to the floor.

Through the anguish, he managed to speak.

"You may not do this, Helen. They will..."

"They will what? They will come for me? They will punish me? They will die if they try. Guess what I learned tonight, bother? Guess what secret was given me?"

"I don't know what you're talking about"

"Oh but you do. Still, it's been so long since you did this thing; it's probably lost all of its importance to you. It's no longer in the forefront of your memory."

"D*mnit, sister. What are you talking about?"

"My daughter, you low, worthless, coward. I'm talking about my daughter. You know, the one who's dead. The one I loved like life itself. The one you laid the plan to take and murder."

"I always wondered how they got into mother's home without her knowing. It was because you kept her occupied and distracted. She blamed herself you know – our mother. She always thought it was because of some lapse on her part that my baby died. While all along you were responsible."

"But how?"

"How? Is that all you would ask – how?"

He fell silent.

"Well, just so you won't go to hell wondering, I'll tell you. The prophecy you and your ilk worship. Well it's no prophecy and I know this because I have spoken with its author."

"That's not possible. The prophecy is four thousand years old."

"Actually it's older than that. And like I said, it's not a prophecy. It's a page from the written history of the Apita."

"You have lost your mind. What have the Apita to do with us?"

"You really are a fool, aren't you? Here you sit, moments away from death and you're just as arrogant and defiant as ever. As if it is you who have been wronged."

"Well, I don't have time for this. Just know we're descended from Apita and my granddaughter wrote what you and those like you worshiped as prophecy for all these long years. She was born to my son, who you tried to kill and were not able. And it is she who came to me and told me all the things I never knew."

"Now. Is there anything you wish to say before I send you on your way?"

"I guess it's only fitting you should take my life. It wasn't enough that Camira had to die by your hand."

"Oh and about Camira. I also learned she lost her mind because of her involvement in your scheme. She never wanted to be a part of it, but you forced her hand. Made her believe it was for the good of the whole."

"Goodbye, brother."

She stretched out her hand, closed her eyes, and pushed down on the air in front of her. Alex's scream lasted only a second. After that he was gone, consumed by the flame that erupted from within him.

Helen turned to Lisa, still in a heap where she had fallen.

"Speak."

"Helen," Lisa's eyes were wide with terror, "I had nothing to do with your daughter's death. Please believe me."

"No. You just plotted to murder my husband and my son. Be thankful that plan failed or I'd be showing you the same mercy I showed my brother."

"So you're not going to kill me?"

Helen shook her head.

"Not today. But I want you to take a message to the others. Tell them to prepare. Tell them I'm leaving; that where I'm going they can't follow; and that when I return war will not be far behind. Tell them that when that happens, they'd better be ready to put aside whatever issues they have with the humans because they're going to need them as allies. Because the enemy that will follow in my wake will murder our world and everything on it. Tell them to make peace with the ones they so despise because their stake in this will be as great as ours."

Lisa just sat on the floor.

"Go, woman. I'm tired of looking at you, now."
