I thought it would be OK if we posted a do and don't list here. I think many people don't know what to say or how to react when your child is diagnosed - and I'm sure that all wilms-parents have good advice.
Here's my tips:
DO
- take contact with us. It's OK that you don't know what to say.
- Offer to do spesific chores to help out: Clean the house, showel snow, take siblings out on fun activities, ask what is needed or suggest yourself!
- ask: How are you dealing with this? Do you want to talk about what you're going through - or do you want to talk about something else?
- make it clear that you're there for the family.
Don't
- say "I know how you're feeling." You don't.
- stay away
- tell about everyone you know that has cancer
- find alternative suggestions for curing cancer - unless you're asked spesifically!
-------
I'm sure you all have more! |
