26, y/o TB with Cushings

PLEASE HELP! My poor Tig really loves treats. I don't know whats safe with his Cushing's. Furthermore, anything new I seem to try gives him bad loose stools. He's a "chow hound" easy keeper, gets fat easily so I have to be very careful. He gets Pergolide every night, timothy hay from KY and Seminole Happy Hoof only. He's on very poor pasture b/c my vet said we should not reseed or fertilize the pastures.

Re: 26, y/o TB with Cushings

Hello O.H.,

Thank you for writing and I apologize for the delay in answering your question.

Yes, there is a wonderful treat that you can give to a horse that has Cushings (or any horse that needs to reduce sugar and starch intake). It's called Skode's Horse treats and it comes in several forms -- trail mixes, cookies, and brownies.

You might also want to consider giving him Cush Alleve -- this has been shown to reduce the amount of pergolide necessary in most cases.

All the best,

Dr. Getty
