Purinas new WellSolve L/S
Hi Dr. Getty,
Hope you are well, been a long time! I wondered how you felt about Purina's new feed: www.wellsolveequine.com
It looks to be well reseached, I am thinking of feeding this to my new horse, which I should be purchasing soon. After all the problems we had with Daytona's health with his IR, I want to give this horse the best shot at never developing IR. I can no longer obtain Triple Crown Low Starch.
Best to you!

Re: Purinas new WellSolve L/S
Hi Della,
I, too, am looking forward to learning the specifics about WellSolve/LS by Purina. The description sounds good but the actually nutritional analysis is not on their website as yet. And, neither are the specific ingredients. I would also want to know the %NSC, and better yet, the percent starch and percent sugar.
So, we shall see. For now, it looks like Purina has finally gotten on the bandwagon!
All the best,

Re: Purinas new WellSolve L/S
Jennifer,
Thanks, I had seen the NSC on their web page. I am going to be feeding it to my new AQHA gelding even though he is not IR. I want to keep the NSC low. I will report back on how I like it!

Re: Purinas new WellSolve L/S
Hi Jennifer,
Thanks for the info -- this looks like a decent feed. I don't know the nutritional analysis and how much vitamin E, for example, is included. And, as with any commercial feed, you need to feed it according to directions to benefit from the added vitamins and minerals. If this is impractical (which it often is, since much more than needed is generally suggested), then a vitamin/mineral supplement is advised.
All the best,

Re: Purinas new WellSolve L/S
I have a miniature horse that I had been feeding the TC Safe Starch Forage to and have had to find something else, which is unfortunate because she did really well on this feed. I contacted Purina and received a response from them just recently regarding their WellSolve L/S. My mare is prone to laminitis, her dam has been diagnosed as IR, and it has been suggested that my mare may be IR, but I have not had her tested yet. I would be interested to hear what others have heard, good, bad or indifferent about the WellSolve L/S.

Re: Re: Purinas new WellSolve L/S
I'm just changing my 250# mini gelding to Wellsolve L/S with hay from beet pulp and hay because all the beet pulp we get in this area is full of trash. My question is how much should he be getting? He's fed twice a day with a hay snack at lunch. Right now he's getting about 2 lbs. hay a day with 8 oz soaked beet pulp. The directions say .3 - .6 lbs per hundred weight which comes out to up to 24 oz L/S a day. Seems like a lot. Do I continue to give him the Glanzen Light?
Many, many thanks!!! Pam

Re: Purinas new WellSolve L/S
Dear Wellsolve L/S users,
Purina does not list the ingredients nor the nutritional analysis for this product. This does not surprise me since they do not list anything but descriptive comments about any of their products, making it very difficult to assess the overall quality.
So, if any of you have the feed tag, would you please take a moment to type out the ingredients and guaranteed analysis for me?
Thanks so much!

Re: Purinas new WellSolve L/S
I am presently using the Purina WS feed on my foundered mini, and he gobbles it up !! I'm also giving him TC low carb Timothy cubes, but he only eats them if I crumble them. He will NOT eat them if I put water in them. I had been discussing Wendland's One & Only with the riding group I belong to, and they all threw a huge hissy fit about how bad the O&O was. I fed it for over 8 years with NO problems, and even got a note from a rep this morning, after asking the company how much corn is in it. He said that the O&O has consistently 2.5% corn in the formula. How does that translate in NSC's ? How DO you calculate that ?
Thanks.

Re: Purinas new WellSolve L/S
Carol,
Thanks for the tag info. Looks very good to me, I had a IR horse for 5 years, I wish we had a feed like this for him when he was alive. I had not purchased any of the L/S feed yet. What was the price you paid for the L/S? Glad to hear your mini loves it!
Thanks for taking the time to post the tag.

Re: Purinas new WellSolve L/S
Glad I could post it. I just started my mini mare on it this past Sunday. We just had our last show on Saturday and I didn't want to make any changes to her diet until she was done showing. She seems to like it, as does my gelding. I also tried the hay cubes but they wouldn't eat it unless I crumbled it too, and that just takes way too much time.
I've only bought one bag of L/S so far and it was $29. My vet did give me a coupon for a free bag and I have a coupon from Purina buy two get one free, which will help.

Re: Purinas new WellSolve L/S
Hello Carol and Shari,
Carol, thank you for the info. It looks like a fine feed and I'm pleased that Purina has finally gotten on the bandwagon with the recent research. It does contain soy oil -- most commercial feeds do. And, this can be a problem for horses that are experiencing any inflammation (and hence, pain). Soy oil is high in omega 6 fatty acids and can increase inflammation. So, a horse that has laminitis, for example, will experience more pain from this feed. Therefore, I would not suggest feeding it during times when a horse is in pain.
Shari,
About the corn in your feed -- I can't tell you the exact %NSC but 2.5% corn would translate into a very small amount. If you fed 6 lbs of feed, for example, 2.5% of this would only be 2.4 ounces by weight. Or another way to look at it -- A 2-quart scoop would only contain less than 2 ounces by volume.
But, corn may not be the only cereal grain in the feed, so that's worth checking in to.
Thanks for writing, ladies!

Re: Purinas new WellSolve L/S
Dr. Getty,
Thanks for the info on the soy oil. My mare has thankfully been pain free for several years. But I will keep this in mind if she starts to show signs of pain. My vet does highly recommend this feed for IR, cushings and laminitic horses.
I had talked to Purina representatives at the Equine Affaire in Pomona, CA this past Feb (2008) so I had a heads up at that time that they were getting ready to release this feed. I am so glad they did.
Dr. Getty, I am very thankful that I found your site.

Re: Purinas new WellSolve L/S
Hi Pam,
Somehow your question got embedded in earlier posts, so I'll answer it here.
Here is what you wrote:

Many, many thanks!!! Pam
You can safely follow the directions and feed according to his exercise need. At the low end, he would have 12 ounces (3/4 of a pound) per day.
However, offer him hay so he doesn't go for more than 3 hours without anything to graze on. You don't need beet pulp. You can replace it with hay as you mentioned. But, it's important to allow him to have as much hay as he needs to keep his digestive system healthy.
If he's maintaining his weight on just hay, you could simply give him Glanzen Lite to fill in the gaps, and add it to an even smaller amount of Wellsolve L/S where it would simply act as a carrier for the supplement. Adding a commercial feed is only necessary when the calorie need is higher due to exercise. It should not replace all the hay he wants. And, adding a vitamin/mineral supplement such as Glanzen Lite, will round out the diet very nicely.
All the best,
Dr. Getty
