Re: bred mare?

Hello Karin,

The normal gestation for a mare is between 320 and 360 days, with 11 months being the average.

Depending on whether this is her first pregnancy, or she has had many foals in her lifetime, she will exhibit changes accordingly. She won't start to "show" for many months into her gestation period, but during her last three months, she will gain weight rapidly (1/2 lb or more per day).

You may find The Complete Foaling Manual helpful -- it has many beneficial photographs and clear explanations of what to expect during pregnancy and foaling.

All the best,

Dr. Getty
