Why can I see ribs?

My filly looks absolutely fabulous in the neck, hip, topline, all over is plump and show-ready, but her ribs are visible. Why is this? She has been Powerpacked once each month for the last two months to rule out parasites.

Re: Why can I see ribs?

Hi Chelsea,

If you can see her ribs, she is slightly underweight. If she is a Thoroughbred, this is common. However, an ideal weight would be where you can feel the ribs and perhaps see them slightly when she moves, but they should not be visible when standing still.

Ration Plus is worth considering as a means to gain weight and I also like feeding Hard Keeper as an additional source of calories from fat.

Thanks for writing.

All the best,

Dr. Getty
