Welcome to STOPTILMA
Welcome to the TILMA discussion group. This is a letter I wrote and was printed in The Surrey Now, Feb. 10/07 - Letters Ilook forward to reading your thoughts, opinions and ideas. STOP TILMA NOW! LETTER: Minister Colin Hansen is deliberately misleading British Columbians on the impact of TILMA. What this agreement really does is entrench American-style personal property rights. His argument that this is not a secret agreement belies the facts. The scope and far-reaching ramifications of this document is precisely why governments and private corporations kept this out of the public eye. Alberta International and Intergovernmental Relations Minister Gary Mar stated TILMA is "everything Canadian business asked for." And according to Jenny Kwan, B.C. NDP Opposition Critic for Economic Development, "Consumer groups, professional associations, workers, and government representatives from key sectors, including health and the environment were never invited to provide input." It begs the question then, "Who did governments consult with?" We already have the Agreement on Internal Trade (AIT) so why do we need TILMA? We don't. Business does. TILMA is an investment agreement not a trade agreement and will strip municipal governments (on up) of their power to govern. It will be the beginning of the dismantling of British Columbia and Alberta and much pressure is being put on the rest of the provinces to join. And the man giving a wink and a nod to this blessed event?, Prime Minister Harper. Why? The TILMA Agreement is the precursor, and foundation of, The Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America (SPP) Agreement. The SPP is a mind-boggling document that involves the "deep integration" of Canada, the U.S. and Mexico creating a new North American Union (NAU) where every single aspect of our lives will be "deeply integrated" (you will hear this term a lot) with the U.S. and Mexico. The United States, in essence, has asked our federal government to accede Canadian sovereignty and Prime Minister Harper has, on our behalf, agreed. It's frightening and, I believe, treasonous. And just as with TILMA, the SPP Agreement calls for massive deregulation which is again, being drafted behind closed doors by powerful business corporations and government representatives and will only be discussed openly when they believe it's too late to do anything about it. It's sneaky, underhanded, antagonistic and evidence of a collective contempt. Governments and corporations have had several years to craft TILMA and we should have more than 2 months to inform ourselves and decide if this is what we want. What's the rush? If this is good for citizens it will stand the test of time - and a vote. I urge everyone to contact your MLA's, MP's, Ministers, Campbell, and Harper (information and addresses can be easily accessed on stoptilma.com) and demand that this agreement as well as the SPP Agreement be brought before the public and referendums held (unless of course they prefer, as do I, going to the polls). It is our democratic right to do so and not theirs to deny. Janice Crawford Surrey |
