A host of questions...
Hi everyone, I've been thinking about coming to Goldstock for months now and have been consistently confused on info. I'm looking for a page that explains it all, procedures, how many dogs a person can bring, what goes on between activities, are there activities you can't bring your dog to, do all the dogs just sleep loose in the cabins, are crates required, kids are welcome, but in the cabins? Kids prices are listed for the whole camp, but not for the day. The Goldstock Fund site has a place to click for Special Fundraisers and on that page the title mentions camp info, but there is no camp info. I have not been able to find a contact e-mail on the registration site, nor have I been able to find answers to these questions. I didn't want to have to write here and ask everyone all my little detail questions (of which I have more I'm sure-just can't think of them now). Those of you who are new this year, how did you find everything out that you needed to know? I feel like I'm being such a pain, but I guess I'm a detail type of person and I've had trouble learning the details "officially". I have heard that the camp is being run by one person this year, Gail?, and not through the Fund? That could be why the information seems scattered? She must be working so hard! I really do appreciate that. Anyway, if there's anyone who could fill me in, it would be great. I was aware that numbers were being finalized last week, but still didn't register because I was trying to get more info. I'd honestly forgot about this forum. I was on on another forum which had a forwarded e-mail from Gail about numbers being finalized and I asked that forum for a contact. All I got was someone giving me the Goldstock2006.org website, which I've already explored. Thanks for any help. I feel like a clueless idiot. Karen

Karen, I may not have all the answers you're looking for, but I'm happy to share what I learned during my first visit last year. I don't think there is a limit as to the # of dogs you can bring. They just need to be friendly and you need to be able to manage them. Crates are not required, but some people do use them. Mostly, the dogs sleep loose in the cabins with their owners. Sometimes you wake up with a dog that's not your own, but that's life at Goldstock. :) Between activities, people shop at the Rescue Booths, or take their dogs swimming, hiking, playing fetch or just hanging out, etc. If I remember correctly, the only places/events dogs were not allowed were in the Mess Hall, the swimming pool and in the building (can't remember the name) where the Silent Auction and Doghouse Dancers demo are held. Sorry, I don't know anything about the kids' pricing. Hope some of this helps. Paige |

Tracey, Thanks for trying, but I've been to that site many, many times. I said in my post that I'd been to that site and couldn't find what I was looking for. Maybe there is a specific place there that I am just not seeing? Something that lists what to bring, how many dogs a person can bring, where dogs stay when we are at places that they are not allowed, children's pricing if only coming for the day, and all sorts of other stuff that seems like it should be explained to campers before they register and travel perhaps several hundred miles with their dogs? |

I feel your pain. This will be our first year and I will be going alone with my golden and I know how you feel. I found out all the info on the website, www.goldstock2006.org It gives you all the good stuff. I am driving alone and I am directionally challenged so this will be a stretch for me. Try the website. Good Luck! See you at Goldstock. Trudi and Clowey |

Hi Karen, This is my 2nd year and I was surprised at what I didn't know when I came the 1st year. You get a cabin not a hotel room - no maid service (linens, soaps etc.). My cabin mates had chairs to sit on outside, a broom to clean doggy fur before we left. Electrical outlets are few and far apart but its a good weekend for the "natural" look. there were no children under 13 so I can't address that. My attitude toward Goldstock is that it's for my Kia. If you prefer your Labor Day vacation to be planned with few surprises, (I do) perhaps looking at it as your dog's vacation may help you accept some surprises. I was surprised to be the only one in my cabin with just my sleeping bag, dog, leash, dog food/bowl and changes of clothes. Do bring lots of towels if your dog likes water. Bring bedding, pillow or sleeping bag, towels, wash cloth and toiletries. Of course, we all pick up after our dogs and if we spot a missed one, we pick that up to. The most beautiful sight is the driveway leading up to the mess hall lined with all of the goldens tied up while their people are having dinner. My Kia finally had her love battery filled at Goldstock. It was well worth all of the surprises her mom experienced. |

Here's a compilation list of comments from 2004 forum: warm PJ's, Jacket, Clothes for cold/warm weather THAT HAVE POCKETS! I'm always shoving doggie poop bags,***Goldstock Provides Poopie bags** treats or money in my pockets, Flash light, Bath Towels (unless you're paying the extra $10 for linens) Dog towels if you're bringing your dog, plastic garbage bag for wet things on last day, Comfy shoes (you do a bit of walking at camp!) X-pen or Crate if your dog is more comfortable in one in a strange place Buffered aspirin for your dog (aspirin if they're older and get aches and pains, Immodium AD for diarrhea issues and benadryl for any allergies or to just help them calm down/sleep)And if you're of the persuasion...alcohol (for you) And coming from the Rescue Booth Coordinator for Goldstock, please bring SMALL BILLS! You can write checks at the rescue booths, but those $20 bills get to be tough to break after a while. And with all the raffles going on, it's also good to have small bills handy. Oooh, and make sure you don't pack your suitcase full on the way out there because you'll need space to pack all the great stuff you buy at Goldstock. Or just bring an extra bag along (an original Goldstockers who hasn't missed one yet...this will be year #7, can you believe it?) Fan, extension cord Pack something fun to wear for the pajamma breakfast. We always have dogs walking from one side of the cabin to the other..... it's a hoot! You never know who will show up next. The same goes for who's dog sleeps with who ... the dog you fall asleep with may well be different from the one you wake up with Here is the phone number 570-798-2716 (I haven't checked this-Rachel) There is not always somebody at the phone.I think there is a recorder that is checked frequently. FYI..It is hard to get a cell phone signal at camp. Some people get one, some don't. There are 2 pay phones on the porch at the office. I bring a phone card with me |

Hi there, I'm an original Goldstocker...been to every year of it. Any dog is welcome, but they need to be friendly with other dogs as there are usually 250-300 dogs at camp. And it is CAMP...you're staying in the same cabins the kids do all summer long. Each cabin has 2 "rooms" of beds and with a shared bathroom (usually 2-3 toilets, sinks and shower stalls). The only place a dog can't go is the dining hall. Some folks have X-pens set up around the dining hall, many tie their dogs to the railings/fencing around the dining hall or just leave them in the cabin. Some folks crate their dogs in the cabins and some don't. Be prepared for sand and dog hair in your bed. Can't avoid it. And sometimes a damp bed if a recently at the lake golden decides your bed looks just about right Things to bring...your own linens - sheets, towels, washcloth (or it is an extra $10 if you want the camp to supply your linens), soap, shampoo, etc., flashlight, long pants/shirts/sweatshirts for the mornings and evenings and t-shirts/shorts for the daytime. Probably be a bit chilly for swimming but you can bring your swimsuit. Bring shoes that can get wet or go barefoot down by the lake/beach. I like to bring my camp chair to lounge in, a cooler to keep in your room if you want cold beverages (alcoholic or non-alcoholic). And snacks, too, not that you don't get a TON of fabulous food each meal (this is not the camp food you may remember as a kid!!). Kids are always welcome (all the time or day-tripper)...they just need to be supervised if they are under 16 or 18. Also, bring your checkbook (vast majority of groups do not take credit cards) and LOTS of small bills - $1's, $5's, $10's. Rescues can/will/may run out of change if everyone brings the $20's. Also, I think if you scroll down on this forum, you may see this topic come up again with more lists of what to bring Hope to see you there!Jenny O'Brien Ollie, at the Bridge 5/17/06 Goldstock Rescue Booth Coordinator |

I think our cabin has always set the record for largest number of dogs. We have more dogs than people! Unfortunately, Sue will not be coming with the 8 dogs she brought last year - she has a new litter! |

Hey Thanks everyone for responding!! I contacted Gail who said there is plenty of cabin space, so I'm coming with just me and my two dogs. I e-mailed her about when I would find out the cabin assignment, since I registered so late. Do people know their cabin assignments yet? I know that lots of people stay in the same cabin year after year. Would there be a cabin for mostly newbies, or are the newbies mixed in with the "alumni"? I will be studying the list of things to bring and start packing tomorrow. I thought about having the kids and DH come up for a day, but it's much farther than I'd thought, so I'm family-free for three whole days!! I'll try to look over the names of those who have posted here in case I meet anyone there from this thread. Thanks again! Karen, Sunny and Mister |

Hi Karen!!!! I doubt you'll see this messgae before you leave, since its thurs night now, but I think you're staying with us. Are you the Karen in cabin 29??? All the lists everyone gave you are perfect. It is confusing your first time up! One other thing I'd bring is flip-flops for the shower. And given the weather report LOTS of socks!! If you're with us, then you're with the group from GRRI, Golden Re-Triever Recue, Inc of New Jersey. Our cabin is the one to the right of the path that leads to the lake. I usuasally have my golden at camp, but she's sitting out this year. I hope you don't mind strange dogs in your bed - my Finnie is a bedhopper! We'll have a coffee pot and coolers. See ya at camp!!!!!! Terry |

Hey Terry! I have no idea if that's me or not! Would I be able to find out now what cabin I'm in? I AM from NJ, so maybe they put me in there to be with fellow NJersey-ians. I do however, work with a (horrors!) different GR rescue! I'm with Sunshine Golden REt. Rescue who are mostly in NE, but moving into NJ as well. I'll have my foster-turned-adoptee with me! And the more dogs the merrier! |

Gail sent out an email with cabin assignments. Are you Karen Kumph? You're in Cabin 29. Thats gotta be you, being from NJ and all! But they'll tell you that at registration. If you know you're assignment beforehand though, you can drive your car directly to the cabin and unpack. The parking lot is across the road from camp and a wee bit of a hike. You'll be with a whole slew of Fosters turned adoptee. But we call them foster failures! In fact I think almost evry dog in our cabin is a foster failure!!! You're in good company! Looking forward to meeting you tomorrow!!!! ring LOTS of money - trust me!! |

Hi again! No e-mail for me, but I am Karen Kumpf! Yes, me and my three sons are very proud foster failures. They love saying, "We failed! We failed!!" Sounds like a fun cabin. I'm just about to check the weather. I like rain, and would rather it be cold than hot, so I guess I'm in luck!! I guess since registration is so inexpensive, I'll have lots of money left over for all the goodies!! Hmmm... I have to find my GGRI t-shirt that I bought at the Garden State GR Club match show at the end of April. When will you plan on arriving tomorrow? |

Well, Its 6:45 am now and my ride will be here in 45 minutes! We'll be arriving alittle before noon and staying through Monday. There'll be 9 of us in the cabin and seven dogs. Its light on dogs this year!! We usually have at least 11. A few of us decided to only take one dog - make it easier to work the booth etc. Thats why my non-golden Morgan is staying home. She doesn't play much anyway. Looking forward to meeting you!!!! It'll be fun!! |

Karen, read your post another thread. DO leave earlier than 1:00. You'll miss weekend traffic that way too. I'm leaving soon - but if you get this before I go, give me your email addy. I'll send you good directions - better than the ones on the site. It took us 5 years to plot a good route!! I'm in central/south Nj too. Allentown, near Trenton. |
