Message:   I am a pure blood Nandi and will give you a firsthand account of the Nandi bear by my grandfather Mr. Chepngok Chalan who was born in 1879 and was a young boy herding cows in the late 1800's and early 1900's.Here is his experience recounted to me in the mid 80's.

'We ran to the village of Sirwo which was about 2 miles from our 'Nganaset'(village) because we had heard that a 'Kerit'(Nandi bear) had been killed by the warriors. It had been terrorising us for the past couple of weeks killing goats and chasing people crossing the dense forest of Serengonik.

'When I arrived at the spot of the killingby a creek about fifty or so people were gathered around some beast.I drew closer and made my way through the crowd to stare at this monster whose killing was rare but not unknown. The beast was dark brown in colour and had a long snout,it was at its hind and its body narrowed towards the head. The hair around its hind legs were long and had caked mud making almost fist- sized balls. One warrior walked towards it and opened its mouth with a spear to reveal teeth the size of my fore finger.''It had hooked claws gold in colour, almost like ivory to the feel.'

The issue about the Nandi bear started when he saw a bear in an animal book that I was reading which I had taken from my brothers collection. He was so excited and wondered where the white man had taken a picture of 'Kerit'.He however said that the colour was not of 'Kerit'.I told him that this was called a bear.I became more inquisitive , that is when he started narating his experience to me.

My grandfather was so good at details, and would often correct other m,en of his age over a story they were giving to everybodies amazement.

'Kerit'is not a myth, even in the seventies and eighties many many people sighted the creature which I believe is some species of a bear .There are people in my tribe who can still give clear accounts of sighting them.

Enough research has not been conducted.

My house at the base of the 'Tindiret forest' is open to any serious zoolist who would like to study this bear .You will have access to a phone, Television, hot water, fresh bread and and fresh vegetables amongst other facilities like a bed with fresh linen at almost no cost.I grew up here, my brother lands his helicopter by my house ever so often. What I am saying is that this is not a jungle its a place with access to the world, but still the home of 'Kerit'.
