I wonder if it might have been a marten. They are also members of the weasel (mustelid) family, if I'm not mistaken. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Replying to: Hi, this is a question about an animal I saw while picnicking with my family this summer. I'll bet those of you who frequent this site are way maore knowledgable than I am. First of all I live in central new jersey and actually spotted this animal in a local state park. After that I've spent alot of time researching both online and in the library to no avail. A park ranger that was there that day could not judge what it was from my description. Here goes, the animal was about the size of a cat, it was a light brownish tan color, with short fur. It walked fairly low to the ground, and had a round head with ears almost like an otter. Although it was low to the ground its haunches were still higher up than like a badger or something. The only thing I can think is that it is some kind of mustela, like a fisher. However its body didnt seem as long and slinky as an animal from the weasle family and it didnt have a pronounced neck. It had no tail that I could see, possibly a small nub. It definitely was not a groundhog which are common in new jersey. My description is fairly accurat since I got a good look as it walked fairly slowly off into the woods. if anyone has any idea what i could have been Id love to hear it. |
