Was Brigid a real person? For over a thousand years there have been a great number of people who did think she was a real person. There was a popular pagan goddess named Brigid, but that does not mean a real person with that name did not exist. Yes, the church likely encouraged some of the goddess's attributes to be credited to the saint named Brigid. Don't forget that the stories are ancient. No one knows for certain because there are no original writings from Brigid's lifetime that survive.javascript: void(0);
Brigid of Ireland was written with that in mind. The historical background was written in accordance with what is known about ancient Ireland. For instance, this was the early Middle Ages. Iron and other metals were in use. There were no cities. People of wealth were those who owned cattle. Many people were poor and starving. There may have been refugees from the fallen Roman Empire in Ireland at the time. While Patrick had made great gains in spreading Christianity in Ireland, most of the island was still pagan. Pagans were not evil necessarily. Thus, the very likeable character of Bram. The people spoke Irish Gaelic and Latin. I have tried to give a hint of the Irish intonations of the language while, of course, writing the story in English. These things were gleaned my historical research--something I enjoyed very much. I'm still learning about ancient Ireland and writing about it. |
