Fake IRS e-mails

Have you gotten an email from the IRS? The logo may appear real incluidng the copyright, etc. in the email. However, according to an article in the KC Star today, it's likely that any email you may get claiming to be from the IRS is a fake. Scammers are swamping email inboxes with messages notifying them of an audit or offering acess to a refund! The scammers are trying to get your social security number, credit card number and bank information!! The IRS reported that they have seen an explosion of these emails this year. Taxpayers, take note!....the IRS generally does not send e-mail mesages to taxpayers. The IRS explained they may send you a letter or call you, but they do not send e-mails.

To find out whether a communication you received is from the real IRS is legitimate, call the IRS at (800)-366-4484. Or complete a complaint form at www.treas.gov/tigta/contact_report.shtml
