help loading images from frontpage via ftp

Hi all...
Here's the scoop. We have the professional hosting service, and set up an initial page (www.celebrationchristianchurch.org) using the wizard. However, we have since purchased a copy of front page, and wanted to use that to really design our "own" site. We added subdomain (www.test.celebrationchristianchurch.org) to work on using the front page, then plan to convert all to the original sige when we are finished editing. (this way, something is still up all the time)
ANYWAY!!! I've worked all day today with the front page, and finally had quite a bit accomplished, and even figured out how to upload with the ftp applet. Here's the problem. With frontpage, I created a theme using a photo as a background for each page. I also used our logo as a header at each page. When I uploaded using the ftp, I made sure that I included the image files as well. However, when I view the site, it is just a white background, and anywhere else that there was an image/logo, just the box with the x in the corner. Any advice? I've been veiwing in Mozilla if that makes any difference. Thanks in advance!!
Leah

Re: help loading images from frontpage via ftp

okay...evidently, the site runs great in IE...for some reason not in Mozilla, although when I previewed while I was creating, it was always in Mozilla. Is there a way I can make it run in both browsers?
Thanks,
Leah

Re: help loading images from frontpage via ftp

It may work for you, in IE and FireFox, but it doesn't work for anyone else. It probably works for you because you have already viewed the site locally and the images are in your cache.

Your problems are with your settings in FrontPage. All of your images are referencing your C Drive. Below is an example from your body tag, which defines your background image, and your images/logo.

Change your configuration so that it uses relative references for your design and re-upload your web pages.

If you are going to continue to use FrontPage, and are going to use the FrontPage Extensions, you will have to change how you upload. To use FrontPage Extensions you will have to turn on FrontPage access from your user manager and then upload directly from FrontPage. Uploading using the FTP applet or any other FTP tool will disable the extensions.

Re: help loading images from frontpage via ftp

okay, I understand what you are saying, but how do make the changes?

And how exactly do I upload directly from front page? I tried using their 'publish' button, but it said that bravenet did now accept the upload?

Sorry, I'm VERY new at this, and need specific directions, if possible.

Thanks again!
Leah

Re: help loading images from frontpage via ftp

okay...
one other clarification. I saw that you said using 'front page extensions' We did purchase hosting, but specifically basic, not premium. I noticed that the premium package talks about front page ext. but not the basic. Does that mean that without the premium, I can't upload at all? Just wanted to clarify exactly what we have to work with, so hopefully someone can give us instructions!
Thanks,
Leah

By adding to a thread, you automatically move it to the top. No new messages required. Also, your attempt to copy Martin's text that included code made your message more or less unreadable. So I'm reposting your latest message here:

Hi...I posted below, but wanted to bring it up to the top. Quick version of my problem is that I created a site using Front Page (2002). I uploaded to bravenet using the ftp applet. Thought that everything was great, but when I view in Mozilla, just have white background instead of theme I created in FP, and all other images/logo are missing. For some reason, when I view in IE or AOL I can see the images, but another poster said that he could not, so for some reason that was just my computer. Following is what another poster said the problem was (thanks Martin E. Meserve) but, I am REALLY new at this, and need more specific directions. I tried changing the image ref. to the url that comes up when I click on them from the file manager (I did upload each image separately, thinking that would help) but even when I changed that area of the html, there was no change, so for now I reverted back to the original. As for the second section of his responce, I noticed that the Premium service offers the front page ext. Since I have basic(pro) does that mean there is no other way I can upload the front page? I'm sorry for needing such in depth information, but I am very new to this. Thanks in advance!

Re: help loading images from frontpage via ftp

I have done a little looking around, but I don't use FrontPage, so some of this information needs to be researched further by you.

You are correct, if you only have Basic hosting, FrontPage Extensions are not available for you to use. As long as you don't attempt to use any extensions on your pages, there should be no problem.

It seems like a lot of FrontPage users have the problem with your hard drive. Some simply adjust the references, outside of FrontPage, before they upload everything. To me, that doesn't seem like the way to go. Too much overhead involved. But I did find this in some, now forgotten, forum:

I've found that if you do a Save in the Normal mode, this is not a problem. It's when you don't save in Normal mode and go to HTML mode, that you see FP trying to reference images on your hard drive.

To me, that says that the Normal mode may save all your web pages in a folder on your hard drive, and make copies of your images, so that it can use relative references. I suggest looking around in your FrontPage help pages for more information on the different saving modes.

Since you are not using FrontPage Extensions, this means that you can use almost any FTP tool to upload your web pages and support files, including the built in FrontPage uploader. In your Bravenet Account Manager, under "manage hosting" there should be a link that says "ftp access". This should give you the FTP information you need to configure FrontPage. Because you have Basic hosting and do not have the ability to use Extensions, you are using what MicroSoft refers to as a "Unextended Web Server". Try this link to HOW TO: Publish to an Unextended Web Server by Using FTP in FrontPage 2002. It may not be the same version that you have, but the method probably doesn't change much, from version to version. Since FrontPage is a Microsoft product, take a look around their Support Web Site for other possible solutions.

Re: help loading images from frontpage via ftp

I saw another message saying it still doesn't work. If you are talking about awatrule.gif or world.png, those images are still on your C: drive, according to your source code. If the other images don't work, try reloading the page, as you may be viewing files cached in your Temporary Internet Files.

I suggest you resize the logo to something like 640 pixels wide, as it is now forcing many of us to scroll left to right. Not just to look for images or such off screen, you must scroll for each line in order to read the main text. Until 800x600 is dead history, perhaps you should use a 800 wide window to design your webpages.

This is what I see now:
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Re: help loading images from frontpage via ftp

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!
when you looked, I was in the process of FINALLY figuring it out! I just need to finish the world image, then all will be right with the world! Thank you all for your help! The link for microsoft walked me right through the ftp process. I still have to go back and individually copy/paste the url for each of the images into the edit section of file manager for them to work, should be some way around that, but at this point, i'm not complaining! Thanks again!
Blessings!

Re: help loading images from frontpage via ftp

Frontpage normal location for websites has to many
spaces in the foldernames and causes problems
I found.

C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/My%20Documents/My%20Webs/
I usually just made my own folder no spaces.
C:mywebsites/sitename/
or

C:sitename/

For images I found it easier to insert
the image tags in html view directly when usimg frontpage.

I now no longer use frontpage cause of many reasons.
