Best source for old car (over 10 yrs old) reviews?

Hi Ray,

Thanks a lot for your site and all you do to help buyers. I haven't found a good advice source for old cars. The typical sources either don't keep their reviews or didn't do them back as early as I'm looking (1996-2000).

All I really want is to know which models have a high repair/expense risk. I know there must be certain models that fit this category.

For example, I'm seeking a $5,000 car around 100k miles (as a former new-luxury-car-only buyer, this is a huge change). I found a Saab 9-5, which I would have never sought out but it met my requirements. Seems like a pretty good deal. I called a local mechanic and he scared me out of it, saying he can't even work on Saabs and all the parts have to come from the dealer. The salesman told me Saab=GM, so the parts are no more rare or expensive than GM parts. He also said his Chrysler mechanics can work on Saabs no problem.

So, how can I research this 2001 Saab 9-5 to see if they have poor reliabilty history or higher than average parts/repair costs? I also have the same question about some Volvos I found.

I consider myself a better-than-averge (but not expert) shopper. I pull history reports, I can spot a scam, I have a good eye for quality/prior wrecks, I'm a good negotiator, I do my homework, etc. However, I just can't get smart on these older model cars. I really don't want to buy a money pit!

Thanks a lot for your help, Ray!

Ryan

I really don't care which models have a high repair risk if you're buying a used car, there is a lemon in every batch, condition is the only factor that come into play, especially in the price range you're looking.

Let's assume you found the 2001 Saab highly rated - Does it make a difference ? if it's been poorly looked after, a Saab with 150K can be a better value than another same with 75K.

I like Saab - Volvo - BMW and other luxury cars in that class, but would I buy one at even $10,000 ? NO,,, my number 1 fear, should vehicle have issues, you better have deep pockets.
