Sikh-Americans asked to be cautious against hate crimes

New York,Friday, March 21, 2003: A Sikh body in the United States has cautioned the members of the community against possible hate crimes following American invasion of Iraq as they might be mistaken for Arabs or Muslims because they sport a beard.

"Unfortunately, past war in the Middle East and terrorism directed against US interests had led to misguided bias attacks against Sikh-Americans," the Sikh Coalition said.

"We hope that this bias does not rear its ugly head again," the Coalition Director of Community Affairs said.

The Sikh Coalition had documented more than 200 hate incidents against the community after the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington.

Following the attacks, some Sikhs here had started wearing pins on jackets saying, "I am Sikh".
