To me it is a person who takes you through AA 12 step recovery programe
My first sponsor had a saying
A newcomer comes to AA and we tell them Stay away from a drink .Go to meetings Eat chocolate etc etc
After A Time What Else Is There Only The Programe Of Recovery and I agree with him
