swelling in mare

My daughter's girl friend has a mare that has a swollen area about 6 by 8 inches in size just to the front of her right udder. The mare does not seem to be in discomfort and the area does not feel hard, yet it is not real soft indicating fluid. The vet when called did not seem worried if she is not in pain but we are concerned with anything out of the norm.

Re: swelling in mare

Hello Nadine,

Is the mare in foal? If she is pregnant, mares often develop swelling (edema) in the front of the udder before the udder itself starts to bag up. This is normal and harmless. However, in some cases, there is a medical condition known as ventral edema that should be treated by your veterinarian.

Since your veterinarian is not concerned, I would suggest that you keep an eye on it for any changes in the swelling and her behavior. Since this is not a nutritional issue, the best advice I can give you is to seek a second medical opinion if you feel that she is in need of medical treatment.

All the best,
