Changing my feed content

Hi,
I have a 5 y/o TB gelding and a 3 y/o quarter horse.
Both eat the following: 3 lbs. FARR XTN 2 x day.
Free range pasture w/ added grass hay. Not sure of the poundage but no less than 1 1/2 bales a day total.
Free choice mineral block.
Source WT (weight) as a supplement.

I want to change them over to the following feed plan as I have them both in training and think I deal w/ the "sugar high" of the concentrate:

Beet pulp and flax seed/meal mix
and continue w/ the Source WT and free choice minerals and grass hay.

Would these two feeds be ok to feed w/out adding anything else?

Thank you for your input.

Re: Changing my feed content

Hello Elnora,

Yes, the Source WT is a good overall vitamin/mineral supplement that also adds beneficial bacteria. I would continue using it. I would suggest that you discontinue the mineral block, since the Source WT already provides the added minerals. Instead, just use an iodized salt block.

The beet pulp and flax is an excellent combination, as long as you continue feeding hay. I would be careful to not feed more than 3 lbs (dry) at any one meal, since their stomachs are not large enough to handle more than that.

Thanks for writing!

All the best,

Re: Changing my feed content

Thank you so much for writing back. I am going to change my horses over to just beetpulp/flax/sourec WT and hay and will see what the results are. I will write back in a four weeks or so and let you know how it is working out. You are providing a great service here. It is hard to find a good site on horse nutrition where they aren't tyring to sell you something or trying to promote something left field.
Thanks again.
