Eggs in horse treats

I have a few recipes of horse cookies that I would like to make and some include eggs. A few vets have said that it is fine to feed eggs to horses as long as they are cooked, but a friend of mine insists that they cannot digest them. Which is true? I don't want to make my horse sick!

Re: Eggs in horse treats

Hi Molly,

Yes, horses can digest eggs, just like they can any other protein. However, since horses are herbivores and do not eat animal protein sources, I do not feel comfortable adding them to any large extent. If you can make the cookies without eggs, that would be ideal. If you need something to bind your ingredients, you can purchase some lecithin granules at a health food store -- the same emulsifier that is in egg yolks.

All the best,

Dr. Getty

Re: Eggs in horse treats

Thank you so much for your prompt answer, Dr. Getty! I actually use lecithin granules in the homemade dog food that I make, but had no idea they were a binding agent as well! I just thought I was doing something good for my dog by adding them! I am so happy to have found your site!
