Another Flaxseed Question

Hi again Dr Getty! I have another question about flaxseed. I am currently feeding my mare the ground flaxseed, which I buy in 50 lb bags. Do I need to be concerned about it going off? I've been reading a lot about once it being ground, it can go rancid quickly.

Also, a friend of mine takes the whole seeds and soaks them in boiling water to soften the shells - ends up being quite a gooey mess - is this a good way to feed it?

Thanks again!

Re: Another Flaxseed Question

Hi Lisa,

Yes, flaxseed is highly unstable when exposed to heat and moisture because the omega 3 fatty acids are vulnerable to oxidative rancidity. So, it is best to store it in an air conditioned environment, or under refrigeration.

I would not boil them, because the heat destroys many of the vitamins and also promotes rancidity at a faster rate.

If you use a coffee grinder or good food processor, there is no need to soften them – they will grind up very nicely.

All the best,

Dr. Getty

Re: Another Flaxseed Question

Thanks again - I've put them in my big chest freezer - next batch I get will be whole seeds, and I'll get myself a grinder!
