Foaling days

We are expecting a foal in a few days (possibly). I was wondering what if a mare has longer foaling days than normal? Our mare is 389 (according to a foaling calculator, which may not be true) days till foaling. Is that abnormal or normal?

Re: Foaling days

Hi Chrissi,

Normal gestation is 340 days (11 months). However, for many mares, the due date can be much longer. According to Teresa Jones (author of The Complete Foaling Manual), “Some mares carry foals for a full year and a few even go for 13 months. If you are concerned about a mare that is past her due date, your vet can detect good fetal movement.” She goes on to state that there is probably nothing to worry about if the mare is in good health. But to ease your mind, it would be best to consult with your veterinarian.

At 389 days, she is almost finished with her 13th month – so either she is way overdue or her conception date may be unclear.

Keep me posted!
