salt

I have a 6 year old gelding who gets minimal grain, Select vitamin mineral supplement and alfalfa hay.He eats well, drinks well and is happy and eager to learn in our training sessions. BUT he will not use his salt lick in his feeder. I have tried loose salt, free choice and he pays no attention to that. I have given him a new salt brick, but that made no difference. Should I add table salt to his feed ( if so, how much?) or add electrolites to his feed or leave well enough alone. All of my other horses use their salt licks. Thanks for your help.

Re: salt

Hi Lynn,

This is a very common situation and the solution is simple – just as you suggested – add salt to his feed. Good, old-fashioned, iodized table salt. Add one ounce (2 tablespoons) each day, or additional salt after a heavy exercise session where he sweats a great deal.

I would not suggest adding electrolytes since he is already getting minerals from the Select supplement.

Thanks for writing!

All the best,
