Nother question, Soybean and Flax

Hi,
Another question, sorry :)
My 23 year old mare is scrawny, we have tried just about everthing to get her to gain. Under vet care, etc.

Anyway, recently heard of Soybean Meal. So I started feeding her that, and she actually likes it. Should I add Flax seed meal? Or would that be redundant? A stupid question, is linseed meal the same as flax?

Thanks,
J.

Re: Nother question, Soybean and Flax

Hi Jenn,

Flaxseed meal is the same as linseed meal (both from the flax seed), though most linseed meal has been defatted, so I prefer flaxseed meal.

Make certain that the soybean meal that you are feeding has been heat processed. You can add flaxseed meal (Nutra-Flax is excellent) or you can add a weight building supplement (which is generally flaxseed-based), such as Hard-Keeper.

I would also strongly recommend Ration Plus. I have had great success in using this product for weight gain situations.

Thanks for writing!

All the best,

Hello, I was wondering if soybeans are healthy for horses or not?

Re: Nother question, Soybean and Flax

Hi Jenn,

Yes, soybeans are very nutritious for horses. It is very important, however, that they be cooked. Do not feed raw soybeans. They contain an enzyme inhibitor that prevents protein digestion.
