Diet for Cushing syndrome Morgan

Hello Dr,
I have an 18 yr old Morgan that I've had since he was conceived. Needless to say he is like my child. This summer he all of a sudden started gowing extra hair in this 100 degree heat. I had him tested for Cushings but the test came back negative. Since this is such a common thing in Morgans I am going to treat him nutritionally as though he has it. I also am going to give him the herb chasteberry of which 2 different sources have told me works very well.He is getting grass hay, Platinum Plus and oats. Can you help with any other suggestions? Thank you very much.

Re: Diet for Cushing syndrome Morgan

Hello Charlie,

I think you are wise to change his diet since older horses often start developing hormonal imbalances, such as Cushings and Metabolic Syndrome. The first recommendation I would make is to remove grain from his diet. Grass hay, including alfalfa, along with a low starch feed, will be fine. So, you’ll want to stop feeding oats. Oats are high in starch, which causes a rise in insulin levels. In the Cushings or Pre-Cushings horse, the level of cortisol is elevated, which inhibits insulin’s action. So, the goal is to offer feeds that calm down the need for insulin.

Hay, grass and legume (such as alfalfa), should be the basis of his diet. To that, you can add either a complete ration that is low in starch, or depending on his energy need, you can add beet pulp, alfalfa pellets, or flaxseed meal.

Platinum Plus is fine – continue using this supplement.

I hope this is helpful. Keep me posted on his progress.

All the best,

Re: Diet for Cushing syndrome Morgan

Hello Dr Getty,
I have had my Morgan on grass hay, A bit of Nutrena Safe Choice just to mix his supplements in and the herb Chasteberry (A TBSP twice a day) for almost two weeks now and he is starting to shed like crazy. I sure hope this is a good sign. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
Thanks again,
Charlie in AZ.
