Losing weight on my mare!

I have a beautiful 20 year old quarter horse mare that I would like to breed this year. She is probably about 150lbs overweight. She is strictly grass and hay..no grain. Can you recommend a treatment to get those pounds off of her before I breed her? Thanks

Re: Losing weight on my mare!

Hi Lorie,

Since she is only on grass and hay, you really can't cut back on her diet since she needs to have forage available 24/7. If you're giving her carrots or other sugary treats, I would cut those out.

So, the best thing for her would be exercise.

If she has a cresty neck, she would also benefit from a magnesium/chromium supplement known as Quiessence.

All the best,
