Dear Dr. Getty,

I currently am feeding my six-year old thoroughbred Triple Crown Complete feed. He is doing quite well on it. We are trying to grow his heels right now since they are too short. A friend suggested adding biotin plus to his feed. She had used it for her horse on the recommendation of her vet and had great results with her horses hoof growth and health. I hesitate to add anything to the Complete since it already contains 0.20 mg/lb. of biotin. What is your recommendation?

Thank you
Cheryl

Re: supplements

Hi Cheryl,

I would recommend feeding him a product called Biotone-25 (you can read about it on my website store). There is no danger of overloading on Biotin with what you are feeding -- .20 mg/lb is a tiny amount. You want him to have at least 20 mg of Biotin per day along with additional methionine and lysine. Biotone-25 has 25 mg of Biotin per ounce serving along with the amino acids he'll need to help build new hoof growth.

Thank you for writing.

All the best,

Re: supplements

Dr. Getty,

May I ask why Biotone-25 instead of Master's Hoof Blend? What is the difference between the two products?

Thank you,

Cheryl

Re: supplements

Hi Cheryl,

Both products are excellent. I generally recommend Master's Hoof Blend for horses that also have some digestive problems (since it is high in microbials) and who also may not be receiving a complete ration. But, since your horse is young and generally healthy, and on a complete ration, Biotone-25 provides what he needs for hoof health without any extras.

Thanks for asking.
