Winter feeding

I have a 12 yr. old Arabian and a 3 yr. old Quarterhorse. What would be your recogmendation for feeding of these two horses during the cold winter months? Thanks Pat

Hi Pat,

During the winter, your goal is to increase body heat. The way to do this is to provide forage (both grass and legume hays) all of the time -- 24/7. The fermentation of these hays by the bacterial flora produces heat as a byproduct.

Make sure that they get a fatty feed such as flaxseed meal or stabilized rice bran, and a good, overall multiple vitamin/mineral supplement.
