amount of supplement to feed

Dear Dr. Getty,

I was wondering what the proper feeding of the rice bran would be. The bag said 1 lb. for a moderately active horse. My barn owner said a lb. looked like too much since he uses liquid rice bran and only gives 4 pumps. Is the powdered stuff that I got measured differently? Is the 1 lb. too much for a 1000 lb. horse? Should I put him on this new supplement plan graudually, like 1/4 ration of the beet pulp and 1/4 of the rice bran for 3 days, then move to 1/2 ration for 3 days until I see how he reacts. If no reaction, full rations after a week?
Thanks again,
Linda

Re: amount of supplement to feed

Hi Linda,

It's best to slowly build up to a full dose, like you suggested. This will ensure that the bacteria in her hind gut have a chance to adjust to the new diet.

About the rice bran -- if you use a 1/2 cup measuring cup, that weighs 2 ounces (1/8 of a pound). I would suggest starting with this amount twice each day (that's equivalent to 1/4 pound per day). Then you can build up to 1 cup twice a day (which would be 1/2 pound per day).

The "one pound per day" is really too much, in my opinion.

I assume you are using a stabilized product that has added calcium such as Natural Glo? This is important, since plain rice bran is very high in phosphorus and would therefore, need to be balanced out with a high calcium feed.

Keep me posted!

All the best,

Dr. Getty

Re: amount of supplement to feed

Dr. Getty,
Thank you for your quick response. This clears up a lot. I am using Natural Glo. I will start this regimine of 1/2 lb. beet pulp and 1/4 lb a day of natural glo and let you know how he looks! Also, the beet pulp isn't anything that can possibly lead to founder, is it? He foundered about 7 years ago before I got him and it was pretty bad from what his farrier tells me. I'm always conscious of that! He has been sound ever since, but I always keep it in mind.
Thanks,
Linda

Re: amount of supplement to feed

Hi Linda,

No need to worry about the beet pulp. It will not lead to laminitis -- that's why it is such an excellent feed. It has an extremely low glycemic index (meaning it doesn't affect blood sugar levels dramatically like grain does).

All the best,

Dr. Getty :)
