Juniper Berries

Hello Dr. Getty, Got another question for you. A friend we ride with gives her horses 5 juniper berries in the morn. feed and 5 in the even. She said it's good for there kidneys. What is your input on this? Thanks

Hi Vicky,

Uh -- not a good idea, to put it simply. Juniper berries contain a drug that acts as a diuretic. This means that they cause the horse to product more urine. This obviously results in the loss of valuable minerals.

So, my advice is to avoid them.
