OK I need to change what I feed for grain

After all this information I would like to ask what to look for in an all around grain that can be good for all horses. I have 20 and need a basic feed for all except the elderly.
I buy my feed from Blue Seal and they have so many different types that I have no idea what to feed!
How would I look for starch in grain?
What is a good balance of fiber?
What is the protein and fat levels suppose to be?
Thank you for helping me out Doc. It is so nice to have a board that is all about feeding our loved ones...

Where are you from? Maine

Re: OK I need to change what I feed for grain

HI Sass,

Instead of Blue Seal, which is high in starch, how 'bout taking a look at Poulin Feeds. They have a Low Carb feed that's new and much more appropriate for horses' digestive systems. They have dealers in Maine.

funny you should say that. I was just looking them up! there is one that is like 10/20 but I am not sure what the ratios should be in the grains. what about calcium and phosphorus? and fiber ..

Hi Sass,

Which Poulin product were you referring to? I was looking at the Carb-Safe product. It has 28% fiber and the Ca:P ratio is good.

I was thinking of the performance 10/12.

Re: OK I need to change what I feed for grain

Hi Sass,

The Poulin Performance 10/12 is too low in fiber. I like a feed to have at least 15% fiber. Forage is what horses' digestive tracts need to be health, so a complete ration should reflect this.
