Solitude IGR

Dear Dr. Getty,
My vet says that Solitude IGR is safe to feed to my miniatures. I believe Farnam also makes a feed-thru product. What are your thoughts on this? Solitude is supposed to be fed the same amount no matter what size horse you have, but I'm hesitant to give my minis a full dose.
Thanks for taking time to answer all these emails. This is the best site I've found for horse nutrition and I've learned so much.

Re: Solitude IGR

Hi Pam,

I'm delighted that you're enjoying this website -- thank you for your kind words!

Solitude IGR is a new product that, unlike Equitrol by Farnman, is a non-organophosphate. Therefore, supposedly it is safer to use. Frankly, I am not convinced. When a product has a warning on the label that states "can be harmful if inhaled or exposed to skin" -- well, it makes me a bit nervous giving it to my horse.

I hate to say this, but many vets are currently receiving incentives from Pfizer to sell this product. This puts the horseowner, like you and me and everyone reading this forum, in a difficult position. Is it a good product or merely a profitable one?

About the dosage... it appears to be the same, regardless of the horse's weight.

So, that's my two cents on the subject.

All the best,

Dr. Getty

Thank you for your words of wisdom, Dr. Getty. I was somewhat hesitant, too, when I read the cautions but ever hopeful there is something that would help my guys.

Hi Pam,

Take a look at fly predators. I like those and they do work.
