back legs clicking when picking them up

Hi Dr. Geddy:

Its been a while since i posted last. I hava a concern with my mare. She is about 21 yrs old. Recently in the past 4 months when i go to clean her feet, her back legs let out an awful click when i pick them up. It doesn't happen all the time & it it doesn't hurt her. What is it? As being new to horses for the past 3 yrs i am always learning more and more. Someone suggested giving her glucosomine ( i think that is how u spell it) for her joints. Is this a good thing? Any suggestions would be a great help.
Thank You Debbie

Re: back legs clicking when picking them up

Hi, I'm no expert but this sounds as though it might be that your mare's hip is out of place.
My TB's hips are out often and my farrier puts them back for him, when she does this she stretches his leg out as far as it will go and then it is usually better, you can aslo try looking for an equine therepist and they will be able to tell you more.
Hope this helps

Re: back legs clicking when picking them up

Hi Debbie,

It may very well be a joint issue, taking into consideration her age and her response. I would first rule out any medical condition. And, then, she would very likely benefit from a joint supplement that contains not only glucosamine, but also chondroitin sulfate, MSM, and Vitamin C.

Keep me posted!

All the best,
