Feeding hay pellets

Is it safe and healthy for the horses to have alfalfa pellets about 5 lbs twice daily fed with their regular grain [ oats, corn and mineral mix] and shredded beet pulp mixed with water. Opposed to feeding the horses each about 5 pounds of regular hay twice daily. Each horse has a salt block in their stall.
Thank You

Re: Feeding hay pellets

Hi Dede,

The meal that you described is too large to be safe. Horses' stomachs are relatively small. Their meal size should be limited 3 to 4 pounds.

Alfalfa pellets can be fed instead of hay. A pound of hay is equivalent to approximately 1/2 pound of pellets. So you would feed half as much of the pellets.

Thanks for writing!

DR. GETTY
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP IN THIS MATTER. I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT I DO NOT HAVE A HORSE THAT HAS COLIC ON ME.
I WILL MEASURE OUT THE TOTAL WEIGHT OF THE FEEDING AND CORRECT THIS FEEDING ISSUE.
HOWEVER IS SHREDDED BEET PULP CONSIDERED A ROUGHAGE THAT THE HORSES NEED?
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP

Re: Feeding hay pellets

Hi Dede,

Beet pulp does provide roughage, but it is not necessary to feed it as long as you are providing hay and/or pasture 24/7. Beet pulp is excellent when you need additional calories in the diet or as a carrier for supplements and top dressings.

All the best,
