Ration Plus

Hi Dr. Getty,

I've had my horse on Ration Plus for about one month now, maybe less. This may sound like a silly question, but is it better to add it to his feed just before he is fed or could it be added hours before and still be effective? Currently, he receives his dose at supper and my barn manager measures out supper feed in the morning and adds all supplements then.

Thanks!

Re: Ration Plus

Hi Suzanne,

No such thing as a silly question, and in fact, you raised a very good question! Ration Plus is highly stable and therefore, can be added ahead of time. So, it is fine to mix it with the feed in the morning, to be fed later in the day.

This is not the case with many other supplements, however. Many vitamins are vulnerable to heat, moisture and air (especially antioxidants such as vitamin E and C, along with essential fatty acids). So, care should be taken to keep these nutrients in a more temperature controlled environment. Also, if you add water to your feed, I would advise against adding water until just before feeding because this will also destroy many water soluble nutrients, such as Vitamin C and the B vitamins.

Thanks for asking!
