Right Dorsal Colitis

Dr. Getty! I have been reading your forum for about 1 year now and I LOVE it! Up to now all your information has been a great help and I have used it for my horses, but I have a question for you. I have a 2 year old colt that I adopted about 7 months ago. He never really looked "up to par" and slowly started losing weight. I put him on a worming schedule and sanded him every month, but he continued to lose condition. I PowerPaked him and he went downhill with very bad diareaha, mild colic, very gassy, depression, and edema under chin and on lower belly. Vet thought it was sand and possible ulcers. The tests just came back for RDC and we now have him off of all hay and on Triple Crown Senior 4xs a day (half scoop each time with Probios and Physillum (4ozs a day) in it. I was wondering if you had any suggestions on what else we could do to boost him up? We had been using Ration Plus to no avail, but he was still eating hay and now we know that he can't tolerate hay and has to heal.

Re: Right Dorsal Colitis

Hi Lynn,

Thank you for your kind words and I am very sorry to hear about your colt's inflammed digestive system.

In addition to what you are doing, you need to give him plenty of B vitamins. These work together to protect several body systems, including the digestive tract. Give him BPlex -- 2 ounces each day -- mixed in with his meals. Choose a flavor, since some horses prefer that over the plain. I've had a lot of success with the peppermint flavor.

And, if he were my baby, I would give him a potent probiotic that also contains oligosaccharides to reduce inflammation and boost his immune function. Daily Start is the product I would use and suggest.

I hope this is helpful. Keep up the good work, and please keep me posted.

All the best,

Dr. Getty

Re: Right Dorsal Colitis

Thank you Dr. Getty! I have the B-Plex and after the Holidays I will get the Daily Start. He is already improving so much. No more edema, diarrhea, or depression and he is starting to gain weight. He looks and acts so much better. I know that it will take time for his poor tummy to heal, but there is light at the end of the tunnel now! I will let you know how he does! HAPPY HOLIDAYS!! Thank you for your time on this discussion board! Lynn
