EPSM and herbs

Hi Dr. Getty,
I have consulted with you a year or so ago regarding my reining gelding and EPSM. He is doing well and we are about to start conditioning for this show season.
I am concerned about potential muscle pain with work and wanted to give him everything possible to make him comfortable. He is already on a low starch diet supplemented with about 1 pound of canola oil. I was looking at Wendals Herbs in a catalog and wondered if something like that could be helpful.
Thanks
Joy

Re: EPSM and herbs

Hi Joy! So nice to hear from you and I'm delighted that your horse is doing well.

I am not a big fan of using herbs without knowing what possible side effects and interactions can occur. Herbs contain drugs in diluted forms and these drugs can produce side effects. So, proceed with caution.

It is very important to keep his electrolytes in order, as well as enough calcium and magnesium. He is likely getting enough calcium from his forage, but you may want to consider adding Quiessence to his diet. I don't know what supplements you're providing, but be sure that he's getting enough B vitamins along with omega 3 fatty acids, say from flaxseed meal.

Keep me posted!
