Probiotics

Hi Dr. Getty
I have a mare thats due to foal end of march. I have been told that i should give the foal probiotics rigth after birth till about 10 days, and the baby will not get the foal heat scours. Is this a good idea? Ive also heard some probiotics contain a lot of copper thats not good for a foal.
Is there a probiotic you recommend giving to foals.
Thank You so much, you have helped me alot. Becky

Re: Probiotics

Hi Becky,

Congratulations!!! I would highly recommend Foal Response because it provides necessary antibodies for the newborn but also live microbials (probiotics). There is no added copper.

Most of the time, newborn foals do just fine without any additional help from products such as Foal Response. But, there is no harm in offering Foal Response and it provides that extra bit of insurance.

Do you have The Complete Foaling Manual in your library? Since this is your first foal, you would very likely find it helpful to know what to expect, what's normal, what's not, and how to take care of the newborn. It has lots of excellent photos that will help.

Happy Foaling!!!
