hypp

dr. getty, how do I get hypp results from the sire of my colt??? I cannot get intouch with the owner of the sire. Is there a website I can go to?? or do I need to dna my foal instead. I would really like the results of his ancestors though.

Re: hypp

Danell, if I may offer an experienced based opinion to you...If your colt is sired by an Impressive bred stallion, you might just have your vet do a blood test for HYPP. He can send some blood to U C Davis to determine your colt's status. Some owners of Impressive-bred sons simply don't have their horses tested. ( That's irresponsible, I know, but it's their way of avoiding the issue. If they don't test, they have nothing to disclose.) Even if the sire happens to be HYPP N/H, your colt still has a 50-50 chance of having the condition, so you really should test him anyway. I don't think the breed associations are tracking the HYPP status of each Impressive descendant, although you might check with the association that registered the sire. Hope this helps you.

Re: hypp

Hi Danell and Pam,

I couldn't have said it better myself! Thank you, Pam.

Danell, if you find that your Colt is HYPP N/H, there are very specific nutritional guidelines to follow. So, keep me posted.

Re: hypp

Dr. Getty, I am very happy to report that my foal is not hypp pos. His daddy is n/n, according to AQHA. I am very pleased with my colt. He is beautiful. thank you for your help.

Re: hypp

Hi Danell!

That is excellent news! Of course, having dealt with many a H/N HYPP horse, they can lead very normal lives. But, there are precautions that must be taken and it certainly is preferable to not have to deal with the risks!

Best regards,
