BLOODY NOSE

I HAVE A GELDING THAT HAD SOME BLOOD FROM HIS NOSTRIL ABOUT 10 DAYS AGO. I HAVE CHECKED HIM EVERY DAY SINCE AND HAVEN'T SEEN ANY MORE. NOW TODAY, A MARE AT THE BARN HAD A LITTLE BLOOD FROM HER NOSE. NEITHER HORSE WAS WORKED THE DAY OF THE NOSE BLEED. WHAT CAUSES NOSE BLEEDS AND SHOULD I BE CONCERNED. IT SEEMS ODD THAT BOTH HORSES WOULD HAVE A NOSE BLEED WITHIN SHORT PERIOD OF TIME.

THANKS

Re: BLOODY NOSE

Hello Katherine,

Thank you for writing. Nose bleeds, known as Epistaxis, are generally seen in horses that have been heavily exercised (pulmonary hemorrhage). But, they can also be an indication of a fungal infection of the guttural pouch, a tumor, or a rickettsial infection (Potomic Horse Fever). Since you have two horses with this problem, I would suggest that you seek medical attention, since it is likely an infection. It can also be caused by consuming toxic weeds or sweet clover.

I hope this is helpful.

All the best,

Dr. Getty
