PSSM horse and alfalfa hay

Hi Dr. Getty,
Hope your summer is going well? It's definately been a hot one.

I need to move my PSSM horse to a different facility and found the only places available offer pasture turnout and feed alfalfa grass hay. I'm concerned about adding alfalfa hay to his diet. He has done great on grass hay, Quiessence and just recently I switched him Ultium since he decided he didn't like the Triple Crown Low Starch anymore. Dr. Valberg and Dr. Valentine both suggest feeding alfalfa hay but I wanted to get your opinion. Am I worrying for nothing? Also, if I go with the alfalfa grass hay should I discontinue the Quiessence? Thank you.

Re: PSSM horse and alfalfa hay

Hi Lori,

You have no worries -- alfalfa is low in starch and sugar and is not a problem for your horse. But, you do need to continue with Quiessence because alfalfa is not significantly higher in magnesium.

Stay cool!
