Alfalfa and Grass Hay

We grow our own grass hay. It has been analyzed to be 12% protein. I am not sure if I really need to feed any alfalfa. I understand that there is a difference in the quality of protein. I am feeding horses that get a lot of work and are five and six years old. How much alfalfa would i feed if it would be best to feed alfalfa? Would alfalfa pellets be okay?

Re: Alfalfa and Grass Hay

Hi Kasey,

It is very beneficial to add a legume (alfalfa) to a grass hay so that the amino acid profile is complementary. Six to 8 lbs of alfalfa per day is fine, or a 30/70 mix of alfalfa/grass hay is good. If you feed pellets, give one half the amount. In other words, 2 lbs of alfalfa hay is equivalent to 1 lb of pellets.
