Benefits of cold extracted cereals for use in horse feed

I was recently told by a nutritionist in a feed company that horses perform better on feed made from cold extracted cereals than the traditional heat extracted cereals. Can you give me an explanation as to why this would be the case?
Kind Regards
Donna

Re: Benefits of cold extracted cereals for use in horse feed

Hi Donna,

Any time you expose a feedstuff to heat, there is destruction of vitamins. In addition, fatty acids such as those found in flaxseed meal (omega 3) and corn and soy oils (omega 6) get oxidized when exposed to heat, leading to rancidity and the formation of damaging molecules known as free radicals. These free radicals attack tissue at random and lead to a whole array of disorders.

And, again, most vitamins are highly vulnerable to heat. Heat also accelerates the damage caused by the oxygen and moisture found in the air.

So, whenever heat can be minimized, it results in a more nutritious feed.
