Foal's first feed

Hi Dr Getty,

My mare Penny's new filly is 1 month old and is sharing her mom's hay. I'm feeding the mare all the hay she'll eat- 50/50 coastal and alfalfa, plus pasture all day, and Mare & Foal II-P. Is the baby getting all the vitamins she needs through milk, or should she have her own little dose? If so, how much should she have?

Thanks for all your help.

Re: Foal's first feed

Hi Pam,

Yes, it would be worthwhile to give her 1 ounce, twice daily, of Mare/Foal IIP until she reaches one year of age. Give her a small meal of soaked beet pulp to act as a carrier for the supplement.

All the best,

Dr. Getty
