Hard Keeper

My mini stallion has reached a plateau on Ration Plus and Glanzen, along with the alfalfa, SafeChoice, bermuda and beet pulp and I'm considering changing his Safe Choice to Ultium. Do you think Hard Keeper with the SC would be a better route to go. He needs about another 10 - 15lbs on him before he hits the shows.

Such a great web site you have..I'm so grateful to be able to glean so much from you and the others here.

Re: Hard Keeper

Hi Pat,

Purina Ultium would be a much better choice since it has 12% fat, compared to 7% in the Safe Choice.

So try the Purina Ultium first. Then, after 3 weeks, if there's no weight change, add some rice bran oil to his meals -- start small -- say, 1 tablespoon per meal. And build up to 1/4 cup per meal. See how that goes over the next 6 to 8 weeks and keep me posted.

Re: Hard Keeper

Dr. Getty,
I wanted to report back that I've been really pleased with the Ultium. My miniature stallion put on the weight I wanted and has held it during heavy training. It hasn't made him "hot" at all as so many thought it might.

Thanks again for your help!!
Pam
