HI,i have another question.Can a 5 month old colt eat just grass hay(because this is what the vet put the mare on )and get enough nutrition for good health and growth??The grass is timithy and sometimes tiffany hay.THANKS.

Hi Judy,

No -- this is not adequate for a growing colt. He has additional mineral and protein needs that cannot be met by grass hay alone. Definitely add alfalfa to his diet. And, supplement it with a product designed for growing horses. I recommend Mare/Foal IIP.

You also need to have your hay tested for its lysine content. This essential amino acid is needed in abundance and he should be getting at least 44 grams per day. If in doubt, or you can't get your hay analyzed, you can safely supplement Lysine.
