HORSE FEED

I currently give my 14.2hh mare 1.5 scoops of chaff and 1 scoop of calm & condiontiong cubes for breakfrast and 2 scoops of both for dinner. She also has 1/2 an apple in both and 1 carrot and 1 small spoon of garlic in both. She is now calmer than when we first bought her 2 years ago and we are thinking of changing her diet. What would you recommend both for the good of the horse and economically?

Re: HORSE FEED

Hello Leigh,

As long as she is getting all the grass hay and/or pasture that she wants, she sounds like she's doing well on this feeding regimen. I would add some alfalfa (lucerne) to the mix to balance out her protein quality. And, finally, I am reluctant to feed garlic to horses because it can induce anemia. I expect you're feeding it to reduce insect stings. Try adding vitamin B1 (Thiamin) instead, for the same effect along with some apple cider vinegar to her water supply.

Thank you for writing.

All the best,
