Feeding an HYPP horse

We just found out that our 4 year old paint gelding has HYPP. Can you recommend a commercial feed for him, or should we have his feed custom made? Thank you, Lori

Re: Feeding an HYPP horse

Hello Lori,

Triple Crown Growth for growing horses or Triple Crown Senior are good choices with less than 1.5% potassium. And, avoid alfalfa hay; stick with grass hays (timothy, bermuda coastal, orchard, etc.). Fresh pasture is best, but this time of year it is likely not available in your area of the country.

The goal is to keep the potassium level below 1.5% and if you need assistance with looking at your horse's overall diet and environment, let me know and we can set up a personal phone consultation.

All the best,

Dr. Getty
